History of Podcast

The Throwers Podcast is an idea that originated during a car ride to Noah’s home in the state of Texas from the 2010 US Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. During that ride, Noah and John decided that there had to be a better way to get throwers more exposure. After many ludicrous ideas were dismissed, the idea of interviewing the top names in the sport and giving them the platform they lacked, seemed like a good idea.

Noah and John’s mission is to provide entertaining and educational interviews that promotes the athletes, coaches, and programs that are directly involved in the throwing events of track and field. Currently, there is nothing like this for Track and Field fans. As a sport, Track and Field offers unprecedented fan access to the top athletes in the sport and this podcast is an extension of that concept. When they were generating this plan, they were thinking, “How cool would it have been to be able to read in-depth interviews with the athletes and coaches they admired when we were coming up?” The athlete interviews have always been Noah and John’s favorite part of Track and Field News, but the magazine only has space for 10-15 questions and limited space for answers. This podcast allows for unprecedented depth to interview subjects. Their long-term goal is making this podcast the foremost track and field interview source in the USA (if not the world). Noah and John are hoping this foray into the podcasting world will lead to much more positive promotion of the sport.

If this concept plays out successfully, they may consider opening up the Throwers Podcast to other events and make different versions where they interview Jumpers, Sprinters, et. al. Again, they shall see…

Unfortunately, neither Noah nor John have any experience as interviewers but they figured they could do as good a job as anyone considering how well they know the sport and how many people they have met over the years. How hard could it be?

As it turns out, it takes a lot of hours to develop something like this from scratch when nobody knows what they are doing. Over a year, Noah and John laid out a plan and developed a format, called friends who might be willing to be interviewed and laid the groundwork. Over the course of many months, Noah and John came up with “7 Rules” to guide the Podcast:

  1. All interviews will be conducted in person. This means potentially significant travel expenses but there is no substitute for being in the same room with someone when having a conversation.
  2. Noah and John are committed to releasing one interview per month for a year and if the listener ship is willing to support more, they will increase the output.
  3. All interviews will be approximately one hour long.
  4. All interviews will begin with an “Airing of Grievances.”
  5. All interviews will end with the same “8 Questions.”
  6. Noah and John are open to talk about anything and everything, throwing related or not.
  7. While they will do their very best to produce a high quality product, they will never take themselves too seriously.

Noah and John’s mission is to provide entertaining and educational interviews with the top names in the throwing community. One thing is certain…each interview will get a little better as they improve their skills. Just like throwing, it takes a long time to master and a commitment to learning.
